Peripheral Vascular Consultation

Peripheral vascular disease occurs when there is a significant narrowing of the arteries, most often due to atherosclerosis. It may manifest itself with various symptoms, ranging from intermittent calf pain when exercising, chest pain, skin ulcerations, and even gangrene which is the most severe of the afflictions that will require emergency medical attention. Highly trained cardiovascular physicians manage patients with all forms of vascular conditions.

Patients with the following conditions should see a cardiovascular specialist:

  • Patients experiencing aneurysms anywhere in the body from head to toe
  • Patients with peripheral arterial disease, whether minor or major
  • Patients with carotid disease or blockage

Your test results (Ultrasound, CT Scan, MR Scan), a sound in your neck, a history of stroke, all may warrant vascular evaluation and treatment. For the most effective care remember to bring your complete medical history along with your background information and previous test results. This will help your health care provider provide a precise evaluation and treatment plan for your condition. Relax and carefully describe your symptoms, how long the symptoms have been present, when and where they occur and their severity.

The vascular specialist will then conduct a physical examination to help with further assessment, and may order non-invasive vascular laboratory examinations using ultrasound to evaluate blockage in the arteries or veins. Based upon the results different methods of treatment will be specified, which could include medical management, minimally invasive endovascular procedures like balloon angioplasty, atherectomy, stents, and or open surgical repair including bypass. The vascular specialist will use all the latest treatments and technology to insure you receive the best in care that is most appropriate to your condition.
